During our ten years of translating Japanese business and technical documents, we’ve kept track of the most common Latin alphabet abbreviations we encounter. Some of these are obvious, but some prompted a bit of head-scratching and research the first time they appeared.
AP | application program | IF | interface |
CF | cash flow | LOD | level of detail |
CS | customer satisfaction | NW | network |
DB | database | PF | platform |
DC | data center | PJ | project |
FW | firmware | PW | password |
Gr. | group | SW | software, switch |
HW | hardware | WF | workflow |
Wikipedia has its own list but most of those seem to be related to games, not business and technical documents.

You should note that “interface” and “software” are often abbreviated as I/F and S/W.
